2024 후기 학위수여식(졸업식) 식사

8월 29일(목), 오늘은 서울대 후기 학위수여식이 있었습니다. 매번 진행하는 졸업식이지만, 항상 다른 느낌을 주는 것은 졸업생들이 새롭기 때문인 것 같습니다. 오늘은 날씨마저 맑아서 야외에서 사진을 찍기에도 정말 좋았네요.

졸업생들은 이제 학교를 벗어나 사회로 진출해야 하는 부담과 기대감을 동시에 느끼고 있을 것 같은데요. 그런 졸업생들에게 도움이 될 만한 좋은 말씀을 총장님께서 해주셨습니다. 그 내용을 여러분과 함께 나누고자 합니다.

자랑스러운 서울대학교 박사, 석사, 학사 졸업생 여러분!
여러분의 졸업을 진심으로 축하합니다.

학위수여식에 앞서 우리 학생들이 제작한 인터뷰 영상을 통해 졸업생 여러분의 감회와 포부를 직접 들을 수 있었습니다. 기쁨과 고마움, 여러 만남의 추억, 새로운 출발선에 선 긴장감, 미래에 대한 기대와 함께 걱정이 몰려드는 시간, 이 모든 것은 세월이 흘러도 변하지 않는 졸업식 즈음의 경험인 것 같습니다. 지난 시간과 다가올 미래가 교차하는 오늘 이 자리의 의미를 다시 한번 생각하며, 이 소중한 시간의 주인공인 졸업생 여러분께 진심 어린 축하와 격려의 마음을 전합니다.

오늘 여러분이 이 자리에 서기까지 공부하고 연구하며 지내온 나날에는 많은 어려움과 보람이 겹겹이 쌓였을 것입니다. 특히 여러분의 성취는 코로나 팬데믹의 시기를 거치면서 일궈낸 것이기에 더욱 큰 의미가 있습니다. 그 힘들고 불확실한 시기에도 여러분은 지적 탐구 활동을 왕성하게 펼쳤고, 당겨진 미래에 대응하기 위해 열심히 경험을 넓히고 도전해왔습니다. 어려움을 이겨내며 축적한 다양한 역량은 미래에 진가를 발휘할 여러분만의 견실한 자산입니다.

오늘이 있기까지 여러분을 사랑으로 감싸고 응원해주신 가족과 친구들, 여러분을 가르치고 성장시켜 주신 교수님들, 캠퍼스 곳곳에서 여러분들의 활동을 뒷받침해 주신 직원 선생님들을 기억하며 그분들께 고마움을 전하고 기쁨을 함께 나누시길 바랍니다. 무엇보다도 서울대에 대한 신뢰를 바탕으로 여러분의 학업과 연구가 가능하도록 지원해 준 국가와 사회, 국민의 기대를 가슴 깊이 간직하기를 바랍니다.

사랑하는 졸업생 여러분,
이제 서울대학교는 여러분의 모교가 되었습니다. 앞으로 여러분은 서울대에서 형성한 자아와 가치관을 사회 속에서 표현하고 실천해 나가게 될 것입니다. 학문공동체의 이름으로 우리가 공유하고자 했던 ‘서울대의 가치’가 이제 여러분의 활약을 통해 세계 속에서 실현될 것입니다. 졸업생 여러분은 서울대의 전령이자 표상입니다. 이곳에서 진리가 여러분의 빛으로 자라났다면, 이제 그 빛을 세상에 널리 퍼뜨려 주기 바랍니다. 진리를 추구하는 과정에서 희망의 싹, 행복의 가능성을 발견했다면, 이제 더 많은 사람들과 그 희망과 행복을 나누길 바랍니다.

오늘 특별히 여러분의 졸업을 축하해주시기 위해 김준구 네이버웹툰 대표님이 이 자리에 와주셨습니다. 20여 년 전에 여러분처럼 새로운 출발선에 서셨던 김 대표님은 졸업 후 새로운 영역을 개척하여 우리 모두에게 희망과 열정의 힘을 보여주셨습니다. 지금은 거대한 문화가 된 웹툰이 걸음마 단계였을 때부터, 이제는 누구나 아는 웹툰 작가들이 미래가 불투명한 무명작가였을 때부터, 그들과 함께 대한민국에 웹툰의 씨앗을 뿌리며 가꾸어 온 분이 김준구 대표님입니다. 그리고 이제 김 대표님은 한국을 넘어 전 세계로 K-웹툰을 전파하고 계십니다. 오늘 졸업하는 여러분도 자신의 역량과 잠재력을 믿고 큰 꿈을 담아 새로운 영역, 새로운 세계로 과감하게 나아가길 바랍니다. 그곳에 여러분의 행복이, 그리고 여러분을 통하여 모두에게 전파될 희망이 있을 것입니다.

우리 모두의 미래인 졸업생 여러분,
저는 여러분이 사회에 나가서도 서울대인으로서의 자긍심을 잃지 않으리라 믿습니다. 자기 자랑, 오만과는 다른 이 자긍심에는 보편적 가치를 추구하는 열정이 담겨 있습니다. 서울대 졸업생이라는 이름은 자신을 내세우기 위한 간판이 아니라 미래를 여는 배움과 공헌의 가치에 대한 우리의 자긍심을 대변하는 자격입니다. 이제 그 자격에 걸맞게 현실에 안주하지 않고 불확실한 미래를 개척하는 데 앞장서기를 바랍니다. 보다 넓게 그리고 멀리 바라보는 식견을 길러 우리 모두의 미래를 밝히고, 공동선을 실현하는 일에 갈고닦은 역량을 십분 발휘하기를 바랍니다. 여러분의 모교는 그런 여러분을 늘 응원하고 자랑스럽게 여길 것입니다.

오늘 여러분이 정든 캠퍼스를 떠나더라도 서울대의 교문은 여러분을 향해 늘 열려 있을 것입니다. 현장에서의 경험을 통해 더 많은 배움에 대한 갈망이 생길 때, 성숙의 의미를 일깨워주신 은사의 지혜와 조언이 필요할 때, 또는 캠퍼스에서의 추억이 그리울 때, 늘 열려 있을 서울대의 교정을 다시 찾기 바랍니다. ‘대전환의 시대를 이끌어가는 학문공동체’ 서울대학교는 끊임없이 혁신하고 발전하면서, 여러분과 국민 모두를 위한 자긍심의 원천이 되겠습니다.

I sincerely wish you all the best in your new beginnings.

Prior to the commencement, I was able to hear the graduates' emotions and aspirations through interviews produced by our students. The joy and gratitude, the memories of many encounters, the nervousness of starting a new life, the anticipation and anxiety of the future - all of these seem to be timeless experiences around the time of graduation. As we reflect on the meaning of today's ceremony, where the past intersects with the future, we would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations and encouragement to the graduates who are the protagonists of this precious time.

The years of study and research that have brought you to where you are today have been both challenging and rewarding. Your achievements are especially meaningful because they have taken place during the COVID pandemic. Throughout this difficult and uncertain time, you have continued to pursue your intellectual questions and eagerly broaden your experience and prepare yourself to meet the challenges of the future. The diverse capabilities you have developed through hardship are solid assets that will serve you well in the future.

As you remember the family and friends who have surrounded you with love and support, the professors who have taught and nurtured you, and the staff members who support your activities around campus, I hope you will express your gratitude to them and share your joy. Most of all, I hope you will cherish in your hearts the expectations of the country, society, and people who have placed their trust in Seoul National University and made your studies and research possible.

Dear Graduates,
Seoul National University has now become your alma mater. From now on, you will express and practice the self and values that you have formed at Seoul National University out in the world. The “Seoul National University values” that we have tried to share in the name of our academic community will now be realized in the world through your activities. You are the messengers and representatives of Seoul National University. If Veritas has grown by your light here, I hope that you will now spread that light to the world. If in your pursuit of Veritas, you have discovered the sprout of hope and the possibility of happiness, I hope you will now share that hope and happiness with many more people.

To congratulate you on your graduation, Mr. Kim Junkoo, CEO of NAVER Webtoon, is here to celebrate with you. He stood at a new starting line just like you about 20 years ago, and after graduating, he pioneered new territory, showing us all the power of hope and passion. From the time that webtoons, now a huge culture, were in their infancy, when the webtoonists we all know today were unknown artists with an uncertain future, he and his team planted and nurtured the seeds of webtoons in Korea. He is now spreading K-Webtoons beyond Korea to the rest of the world. As you graduate today, I hope you will believe in your abilities and potential, dream big, and boldly move into a new realm, a new world. There will be hope for your happiness, and hope that will spread to everyone through you.

Dear graduates, you who are the future of us all,
I trust that you will not lose your sense of pride in being an SNU alumnus when you go out into the world. This pride, which is different from self-promotion and arrogance, is a passionate pursuit of universal values. The name of an SNU alumnus is not a qualification to be used to assert yourself, but a credential that represents our pride in the value of learning and contributing to the future. I hope you will live up to that credential and take the lead in pioneering an uncertain future, instead of being complacent. I hope you'll think bigger and farther afield, and use the skills you've honed to brighten the future for all of us and realize the common good. Your alma mater will always support and be proud of you.

Even as you leave the campus today, Seoul National University's doors will always be open to you. Whether you are hungry for more learning during your experiences in the field, in need of the wisdom and advice of those who have taught you the meaning of maturity, or nostalgic for the memories of your time on campus, we hope you will return to our doors. As an academic community leading the era of great transformation, Seoul National University will continue to innovate and develop, becoming a source of pride for both you and the nation.

Graduates, you've been on a path of learning,
I would like to congratulate you once again on your graduation and wish you all the best in your future endeavors. May your future be filled with fulfillment, both big and small.
